The European Water, Road and Rail Infrastructure: A Geographical Information System for the History of the European Integration (1825-2010)

This research will provide an empirical basis for multidisciplinary studies on the relationship between terrestrial infrastructures and the making of Europe. We will develop a comprehensive historical Geographical Information System (GIS) comprising the road, waterway and rail networks of Europe. This map series will be useful to analyze the socioeconomic role of transport infrastructures in Europe. To achieve this we will integrate other databases on Europe’s population and economy at the regional or municipal level. This will provide an unparalleled platform from which we will use cutting edge spatial analysis techniques to produce a historical narrative on European integration and the role of transport.

The dissemination of our materials is making an impact through the production and diffusion of scientific materials with a didactic focus via our web site ( http://www.europa.udl.cat/hgise). Yet this site will only be completed at the end of the project.
