Biographical Sketch

I have a long time interest in the study of women, gender and science. In 1994 I earned my doctorate with a cum laude dissertation The gender of science: women in higher education and science in the Netherlands, 1878-1948. In this research I focused on the discourse on ‘woman study’ and its relation to the diverse discourses of the sciences and technology, thus unvovering the mutual and multiple constructions of ‘women’ and ‘science’. A recent publication in Science in Context (5/4, 2002, 484-527) is concerned with an explanation of the ‘Dutch case’, the fact that the participation of women in Dutch universities is (with Austria) at the lowest as compared to other European countries, Turkey and the USA. This research question stems from my participation in European policy making with respect to women in science and the gender dimension of science. Besides historical research into science an universities I have been interested in the historical (international) women’s movement (1990: Politics and Friendship, OSUP), biographical research, theoretical questions of women’s and gender history. At the moment I am finishing my last research project which is a biography of the first Dutch female student and doctor, and a prominent first wave feminist Aletta Jacobs. My future research interests will be directed again more closely to historical research into women, gender, science and technology.
