Gabriele Balbi took a BA in “Communication Sciences” in 2002 and a MA in “Multimedia and Mass Communication” in 2004 at Turin University. He has been a PhD Student in “Communication Sciences” at the University of Lugano since September 2004, with prof. Giuseppe Richeri. His thesis is related to early history of Italian telephone. In 2007 he was Visiting Fellow at Harvard University from February to May (Dept. History of Science with prof. Mario Biagioli) and Visiting Research Student in Maastricht University from June to August (Dept. Social Science and Technology with prof. Wiebe Bijker). Since October 2004 he has been working as teaching assistant (course “Social history of communication”) for the Media and Journalism Institute. He was scientific collaborator for PENG project (www.pengproject.com) and “Hear and See” project (www.hearandsee.ch). From November 2006 he has been collaborator for “History of Italian Swiss Radio and Television” project. His research interests are related to Media History/Social History of Technology; Relationships between Old and New Media; Gas and Electric Light; Telephone; Cell Phones; Early Broadcasting Systems (Telephone Hirmondň); History of radio and television in Italy and in Switzerland; Literature as a source for media history. He wrote several articles on these topics.
