Short biography

Irene Cieraad is a senior researcher in the department of Architecture at TU Delft, the Netherlands. She is a cultural anthropologist who has published widely on the subject of the history of Dutch vernacular interiors and related issues of household technology, and technology’s impact on culture.

Recent publications

Her publications  include “The Radiant American Kitchen: Domesticating Dutch Nuclear Energy” in Cold War Kitchen (MIT 2009) and “Between Sensation and Restriction: The Emergence of a Technological Consumer Culture” in Technology and the Making of The Netherlands (MIT 2010). Entry “Home” in The International Encyclopedia of  Anthropology ( Wiley-Blackwell 2017); entry “Domestic Spaces” in The International Encyclopedia of  Geography: People, the Earth, Environment, and Technology (Wiley-Blackwell 2016).
