Short biography

Dr. Serkan Karas is historian of technology with a specialisation in themes concerning infrastructures, expertise and techno-politics. He has several publications on topics related to politics and sociology of expertise, and infrastructure techno-politics. During his lectureship in Bilkent University, he taught undergraduate STS classes on expertise, risk, governance and knowledge management. He is currently co-organising the graduate seminar “Governance, Risk, Environment: Themes of Science and Technology Policy” at University of Athens. His research interests are around subjects concerning science & technology policy, water-management & energy issues and border studies with a special focus in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

He got his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey). He holds a MA in European Studies in Science, Technology and Society from the University of Maastricht and completed his PhD in History of Technology at the University of Athens. He has been granted Brooke Hindle Postdoc Fellowship by the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) in 2015. He received Karen Freeze Fellowship (Tensions of Europe) in 2012, and Centenary Bursary by the British School at Athens (BSA) in 2010. He was born in Cyprus and speaks Turkish, Greek and English.
